ABSTRACT – The contribution takes into consideration the European Parliament’s Position on the AI Act, adopted on Wednesday 14 June 2023, which is extremely interesting for several reasons. Preliminary, the post will retrace the previous key phases of the legislative process at stake, with particular reference to the European Commission’s Proposal, presented on 21 April 2021, and to the Council’s “General approach”, adopted on 6 December 2022. Then, it will be possible to examine the most relevant aspects of the EP’s Position itself: in particular, the expansion of the lists of prohibited and “high risk” AI systems; the increase of fines in case of non-compliance with the AI Act; and the attempt to regulate foundation models and generative AI systems (such as ChatGPT). Finally, the contribution will make two concluding remarks concerning not only the EP’s Position, but also the next steps of the legislative process for the adoption of the AI Act.
